Living
close to the shore at West Kirby on the beautiful
west coast of the Wirral Peninsula overlooking
the Dee Estuary and Liverpool Bay, David collects
much of the Driftwood used in his designs between
here and a tidal inlet known as 'Mockbeggar
Wharf' at Wallasey.
Since
this part of the west coast is swept by the prevailing
Westerlies and the Gulf Stream, it is likely that
much of the wood collected here emanates from
America, Canada and Ireland; dunnage is thrown
or washed overboard from cargo ships also.
David
regularly runs and cycles along the coast which
enables him to combine business with pleasure
as he locates and hide's any wood ready for collection
at a later time.
David also owns a lovely old cottage near Criccieth
on the north side of Cardigan Bay (available for
holiday lettings), from where he collects Driftwood
on the wild and remote beaches of the Llyn
Peninsula.
Some pieces of Driftwood are bog-oak which is
thousands of years old, and the wreckage of oak
sailing ships which becomes dislodged from the
sea bed during the fierce storms which lash this
coast during the spring and autumn.
David
has even found old oak pieces on the shores of
the River Thames in London, which is likely to
be the remains of oak warships which exploded
whilst moored on the rover Thames, these could
be upto 400 years old.
Much
of the Driftwood has been ships'dunnage, building
materials, piers, breakwaters, wreckage, etc.
Each piece is scrubbed and soaked for several
days in fresh water to remove the salt, before
it is dried naturally in the wind and sun. It
is then used, often with other reclaimed materials
such as: -
- Sea-washed
rope,
- Stone,
- Slate,
- Glass,
- Metals
- Antique
nickel silver cutlery,
This
creates a range of stylish and exclusive artefacts
which will fit comfortably with any colour scheme
or style of home (e.g modern house or flat, semi,
seaside cottage, barn conversion or grand country
house).
Although
the artefacts fit well into most room settings,
they are particularly popular for bathrooms, conservatories
and hallways.
Their
mellow, rustic charm, soft natural colours and
texture, produce a relaxing and calming effect.
Each
artefact has a handwritten label affixed, identifying
it's origins and signed by David.
David is also pleased to supply Driftwood for
architectural use ( e.g supports, beams, lintels,
etc.)
David is committed to the protection of the environment,
hence most of his materials are recycled (e.g
Driftwood, ships' rope, copper tube, cutlery and
occasionally, mirror glass).
However
any apparent cost savings are more than offset
by the amount of time and energy used in the gathering
and preparation of these superb materials.
All new materials used are of the highest quality
and safety standard. David takes pride in ensuring
that all of his artefacts are well-made and finished
to ensure long life, safety and good looks.
David sells his work at prestigious home and interiors
fairs, craft fairs, county shows, horse trials,
and other major events across Britain.
David
has received top awards for quality, style and
presentation at Burghley Horse Trials,
Shrewsbury Flower Show and the
Royal Highland Show.
